Exipnos – Environmentally Friendly Plastics with Passion!
The demands that manufacturers place on modern plastics are more complex than ever. Exipnos’ goal is to find the best solutions for people and the environment, driven by a passion for bio-based, biodegradable plastics and energy-efficient solutions.
Founded in 1922, the company has been working with biological raw materials—including those based on cellulose acetate—for more than 100 years.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, this fourth-generation family-owned business now develops environmentally friendly, innovative bio-compounds such as the outdoor porcelain BioCelain®, which are then manufactured in-house using twin-screw extruders.

About BioCelain®
BioCelain® iis a biodegradable PBS polymer. This semi-crystalline, thermoplastic bioplastic is produced in an environmentally friendly manner from renewable resources with minimal energy consumption and can be flexibly compounded to meet a variety of customer requirements.
Exipnos currently offers, through Grässlin Kunststoffe, seven ready-to-use compounds with different property profiles that can be flexibly adjusted during the manufacturing process to suit their specific applications. BioCelain® is unbreakable, provides pleasant thermal insulation like plastic, is dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe, and has a high-quality feel similar to porcelain. Furthermore, the compounds are easy to process, versatile, and therefore an attractive alternative to conventional standard materials such as ABS, while being incomparably sustainable: Like untreated wood or bamboo, BioCelain® can degrade into compost within months in a biologically active, moist environment. It meets the requirements of European Food Regulation 10/2011 regarding global migration (07.02A00411).
BioCelain® can also be produced and processed using the DCIM direct compounding process developed by Exipnos. At approximately 500 Wh per kilogram, this process consumes about 50 percent less energy than conventional compounding followed by injection molding.
